The standard of competition was raised once again, with children performing handsprings and somersaults on the floor to some fun and inspiring music. They also had a choice of vault to add to their score, and points were given for how well they overcame the apparatus. The audience provided much applause and encouragement for the young athletes, some of whom were competing for the first time.

The intermediate level competitors opened the show – for those who train up to 1 ½ hours a week. Those who train 1.5 – 3hrs a week are considered in the advanced section, where routines are longer and more complex, and the vault is higher. The competition is open to all recreational level gymnasts from clubs all over Surrey and the surrounding counties. The Redhill Donyngs representatives put on an excellent performance again, narrowly missing out on the medals, and members of Caterham based Pointers club took some of the podium spots.

Everyone went away from the event with huge smiles, especially the gold medal winners and those awarded the Judges Trophy Award for Effort.

Pictured below is 13 year old medal winner Francesca Bagley from Springfit, performing her floor routine.

The final Springfit Invitational trampoline competition of 2011 brought together many excited children and their parents on Saturday 12th November at Moor House School Sports Centre in Oxted.

The superb venue saw trampolinists from various local clubs and schools throughout Surrey compete in various age and ability categories, and provided many happy children with winners medals.

The amount of children competing in the beginners ‘Grade 8’ category was a record high for the tri-annual event, providing many first-time competitors with a chance to pit themselves against their peers, all of whom train only one hour a week, in an invitingly fun and friendly competition atmosphere. The youngsters showed fantastic spirit and determination to perform the best routine they could for the judging panel, and enjoyed the spotlight with smiles of confidence and pride. The medal ceremony had some delighted winners skipping up to the podium.

The advanced section followed, with more complex routines involving multiple somersaults and far more difficult moves. There were some spectacular demonstrations of strength and control on display, and some drama too, as the clear leader after the first round of advanced grades lost out on the gold medal to her sister. With an almost flawless routine, the brave 10 year old saw off some stiff competition from older and more experienced gymnasts but struggled with the more difficult voluntary routine in the second round.

Head judge Adam Reynolds said of the competition “Everyone has been so positive about the whole event and it was great to see such progress in the popularity and performances.”

Pictured below are the medal winners of the earlier grades and advanced sections.

Springfit gymnastics and trampoline club recently held class displays for the parents of each of their twelve ability-based gymnastics classes. All members performed choreographed routines and exciting gymnastics moves on various apparatus to demonstrate what they have learnt in the six months since the last displays.

One lucky gymnast was chosen from each class to receive a gold medal for attainment. This progress medal is handed out in recognition of the effort and commitment to gymnastics training shown by the children who take part in weekly classes at the club. Chosen by the coaching teams who run each session, the decision is often difficult to make, as the enthusiastic youngsters put so much effort into improving their strength and flexibility every week in order to achieve new moves.

Those receiving the reward were understandably pleased to be singled out, and their parents who were watching were just as proud. Many commented on how they could see their child’s confidence was boosted through recognition of their efforts, and explained how their individual development had increased through participation in the sport.

The club is pleased to offer these sessions as a way of helping children get used to performing for an audience, which can help prepare them for the fun and friendly competitions run throughout the year, as well as providing parents with a great sense of pride at watching them enjoy their sport.

Pictured here from top left to bottom right are all the November progress medal winners at Springfit club:

From St Bedes, Redhill boys class – Aidan Boakes (7), from Oakwood, Horley: Boys class – Jonathan Brown (8), Friday beginners – Carla Wells (9), improvers – Ellen Paterson (15), advanced – Beth Whitmore (8), Saturday beginners – Lara Hill (6), improvers – Emily Marti-Cornish (6), advanced – Elise Fry (8), Sunday beginners – Ella Mullan (7).

My name is Dougal, but you can call me Douggie. I am a good boy and I have a new home.

I have had many homes before but I hope I stay in this one.

I have two new “sisters” one called Holly and she is silly and the other called Jess and she is old. They have both had other homes before this one. I am a “Heinz 57” which means I am very lovely, according to my new “Mum”. Holly is a spaniel and Jess is a sort of labrador. Jess and I play games in the house and make lots of noise and we are told to “stopmakingthatawfulracket”. Holly and I go chasing things on our walks and we dig huge holes together. We all like barking very loudly when someone comes to the door. We keep our loudest barks for the postman.

I hope I can stay in this home because I am happy. I have been here now for 3 months and I am starting to feel as if it could be my home for always. It is not easy to settle into a new home and to learn all the new things I can and can’t do. I think I will write a diary to tell you how I am getting on.

I like to greet my new Mum and Dad by holding their arms in my mouth. I only chew on them a bit; to show how very happy I am. They seem to think this is not good. They keep saying things like “no” and “off” and “gotoyourbasket.

I don’t like cats or joggers or flies or “stopmakingthatawfulracket”. I like cuddles and walks and my new house and Jess and Holly and my Mum and Dad and “goodboys”.

We are all going on “holiday” soon. I don’t know what it means but I am excited.
I will tell you what it is when I get back.

Woof!

The new sessions are running on Thursday’s at 12pm and 1pm for pre-school children aged 2-4 years, and there is still availability for young children to build gymnastic and other life skills by joining the classes.

Following the excellent reputation of the club in the Surrey and Sussex area, more classes are already being planned for after-school hours in the near future, and parents are encouraged to register their interest.

One Funfit class parent said of the class; “It has improved my daughter’s listening skills and has increased her confidence, and allows her to jump around in a safe and fun environment. In short she loves it!” Others have cited noticeable behavioural improvements and a keenness to get involved in such engaging activities that they have not seen before.

By focusing on balance, co-ordination and interaction, the specialized classes teach fundamental skills to toddlers and infants, and Springfit have vowed to meet demand wherever possible at their centres in Redhill, Horley and Crawley.

The club’s new venue of Oriel school, Maidenbower has got off to a flying start with all seven classes now full with waiting lists, and was the perfect setting for this much anticipated extra session.

Children and adults from many of Springfit’s classes throughout Surrey and Sussex came down by special invitation to perform preparatory skills and build strength and confidence to learn the necessary amount of rotation and gain the spatial-awareness needed to execute the impressive double tucked back somersault move on the trampoline.

Oriel’s sports hall has a ceiling fixed rig to support gymnast’s mid-air for safety, and every child and adult was supported by level 4 coach and club manager Adam Reynolds. With expert assistance from Head Coach and chief motivational officer Chris Bower, the pilot session went down a storm with those in attendance.

One member of Springfit’s adult gymnastics class commented “This has been the best session I have ever attended. The coaches were able to work with us all on a one-to-one basis and give me some real pointers to help me be able to achieve a move that I’ve always wanted to do. I’m definitely coming to the next one where hopefully I can do it without the rig support!”

The success of the session has led to it becoming a regular feature in the club’s calendar, and management is already looking at twisting workshops for other specialist moves. The younger children are especially happy to see pictures and video of their efforts on the club’s website www.springfit.org.

Springfit club held another of their regular and popular invitational trampoline competitions last weekend at Moor House School in Oxted.

The superb venue saw trampolinists from various local clubs, schools, sports and leisure centres throughout Surrey compete for medals in various age and ability categories. Friends and family turned out in their droves to show support for the athletes, many of whom were performing in from of a crowd for the first time.

Redhill YMCA and Crawley’s K2 members enjoyed being part of the show, where children shared in the experience of competing at the grades they train at in their regular classes. The first half of the competition featured many different age categories of those on Grades 8 and 9 of the Winstrada proficiency scheme.

The youngsters showed great determination to perform the best routine they could for the judging panel, and overcame any nerves they had to join in the friendly spirit of the event. Proud parents watched as some surprised and delighted winners took the podium places during the medal ceremony.

The advanced section followed, with routines involving multiple somersaults from older gymnasts who train at a higher level. There were some spectacular moves on display, and a good spirit amongst the competitors. The synchronised section where two gymnasts perform a routine at the same time as each other was a treat to watch at all levels of competition, and the results were very close.

Pictured below are the medal winners of the earlier grades.

From top left to bottom right:

Kirsten Oshodi-Glover (11, Pointers), Hannah Malcolm (9, Pointers), Anna Hodsden (9, Anti-Gravity), Jemma Belton (7, Anti-Gravity), Rebecca Morris (9, Anti-Gravity), Sophia Dunican (9, Pointers), Alec Hambleton (9, Anti-Gravity), Hannah Wells (8, Anti-Gravity), Phoebe Munday (10, Anti-Gravity) and Emilie Marsh (11, Springfit)

Springfit Gym Club hosted another successful competition for many children of local clubs and sports centres at the weekend. Gymnasts came from all over Surrey to take part in the judged trampette and beam disciplines, and many spectators were on hand to show support for their efforts.

Those who the panel of judges scored highest were awarded gold, silver and bronze medals in a variety of categories based on age and training hours. There was also a bonus trophy to be won for effort in competition, for those gymnasts who clearly tried their hardest but just missed out on a placing. The fun and friendly nature of the event is part of the ethos of the club which provides recreational classes at several venues from Redhill to Crawley.

Many children participating for the first time enjoyed receiving great scores along with the experience, and a trio of Donyngs gymnasts took all three spots on the podium for their beam routines.

Spectators and coaches all enjoyed the impressive display of balance from some as young as 7 years old on the beam, and were similarly enthralled with twisting somersaults and dive rolls being performed off the trampette. Chair of judges Adam Reynolds said “the beam is such a difficult piece of equipment to perform on, but every gymnast tried their very best and did fantastically well in front of the audience.”

Pictured below are the trampette medal winners, from back row left to front row right:

Jack Garner (9, Pointers), Mia Fava (10, Donyngs), Rebecca Cummings (10, Springfit), Emilie Marsh (11, Springfit), Abigail Ferguson (13, Springfit), Josh Pinney (13, Springfit), Lauren Murray (13, Springfit), Anastasia Christodoulides (9, Pointers), George Jones (8, Springfit), Lucy Genge (10, Donyngs), Rosa Gilham (10, Springfit), Zara Flint (11, Springfit), Lucy Pidgeon (10, Springfit), Stacey Connor (11, Springfit), Sofia Sgambellone (10, Springfit), Elise Fry (8, Springfit), Emily Charman (15, Springfit), Katie Pidgeon (14, Springfit) and Abbie Clifton (13, Springfit).

And six beam winners, from back row left to front row right:

Abbie James (9, Springfit), Anastasia Christodoulides (9, Pointers), Laura Elliott (10, Donyngs), Mia Fava (10, Donyngs), Lucy Genge (10, Donyngs), Francesca Bagley (13, Springfit), Isobel Ferguson (7, Springfit), Abbie Clifton (13, Springfit), Lily Fairhall (13, Pointers), Millie Gibbins (9, Pointers) and Rachael Marklew (15, Springfit).
